Difference Between Antique And Collector's Item

Collecting antiques of any kind is such an extravagant hobby. However, for hobbyists, such activity is a source of fulfillment and contentment that no amount of money can ever surpass. Collecting antiques for the purpose of buying and selling on the other hand, is a lucrative business especially if such finds are of great monetary value and interest to the collecting public.

Antique-collection is a complicated undertaking as there are no schools or governing bodies that educate a beginner and there are no blueprint rules that define boundaries and scope of limitations that categorize whether an item is antique or not. Furthermore, there is a big difference between a collectors' item and an antique.

First, we have to draw a line between an antique and a collector's item. An antique is an old collectible item, 100 years or older which represents a point of an era or period of time in the history and collected because of its beauty, uniqueness, rarity, condition, extraordinariness and preciousness passed down as an estate or heirloom. Furthermore, not all antiques are of immense value as some may be as cheap as a dollar and as expensive as thousands of dollars as the value of an antique is determined by its appeal, rarity and social acceptance and pricing is difficult as what may be rare, priceless and unique to a person may not always apply to all.

A collectors' item on the other hand, does not necessarily be an antique. Such items are produced without deliberate intention to make it as a collector's item but it becomes one due its uniqueness, production flaw and sometimes human error and circumstances that brought its creation making it a sought-after item because of its monetary value. The number of production therefore, commands the price of the collector's item. Most often, it is the collecting body that dictates whether an item is collectible or not even if the manufacturer says it so but the public does not find something extraordinary to it.

One of the most popular items for antique collection are furniture of varying styles and periods that they were made, from selected wood such as mahogany, oak, pine, walnut, rosewood and elm. Style of antiques depends on where and when it was created such that the most famous styles include Victorian, Georgian, Regency American Pastoral and among others.

Included among the list of antique collection are coins from different dynasties or era which were made from precious elements such as gold, silver, bronze and the sort. The monetary value of such coins is determined by the number of production and some rare features. Usually, coins which were mass-produced during such period of time are not of great interest to collectors.

Shopping, identifying, negotiating and bargaining for antiques at garages sales, antique shops can be a fun-filled activity.
